Mental Health Disorders After Bereavement: An Overview of Symptoms, Assessment and Treatment
The death of a loved one is a near-universal experience. Though most bereaved individuals will recover naturally from initial acute grief reactions, about 10-15% will develop mental health disorders related to their loss. Adjustment disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and complicated grief are among the most common. This presentation will review key symptoms for these conditions, outline how to identify them, discuss common risk factors, and provide an overview of available treatments. Case examples will also be described.
